Construction on Lake Rabun was completed in 1915, and in the years that followed, Lake Rabun became a favorite summer retreat for families from Atlanta and the surrounding areas. The lakes of Rabun County were built to provide hydroelectric power to Atlanta. The Lake Rabun Association began in the 1920s, and today is responsible for a wide array of events such as charity flea markets, golf tournaments, and the Rabun Ramble, an annual 5k race that benefits a local organization, such as the Humane Shelter or F.A.I.T.H (Fight Abuse in the Home), a domestic violence shelter for women and children. In the summer months, Lake Rabun is bustling with activity. Fireworks, a wooden boat regatta, bingo games, movie nights, dinners, and dances provide entertainment for everyone. Hall’s Boathouse is the Marina that serves Lake Rabun, and here you can get gas for your boat, groceries, and gifts. For residents of Lake Rabun, many a lazy summer afternoon has been spent hiking to a picnic lunch at Minnehaha Falls, an easy hike of about ¼ mile up a gentle slope, or tethering the boat to low-hanging rhododendron bushes in “The Narrows” to fly high and splash hard into the cool water from the “secret” rope swing. Homes in Lakemont range from budget cabins to vintage cottages with a summer camp feel, to breathtaking custom lakefront homes surrounded by startling beauty.
