The location of this incorporated town is unique because it bestrides the Eastern Continental Divide in a deep break in the Blue Ridge Mountains at an elevation of over 2100 feet. Mountain City is home to the Foxfire Museum, a cluster of more than twenty period log cabins with artifacts that give visitors an idea of what it was like for early Appalachian settlers. Foxfire was a program that began in Rabun County in the 1960s, and students created an anthology of Southern culture from folklore to recipes. The proceeds from the sales of the books were used to build the museum and village. Vacationers from the lakes and locals from all over flocked to the Mountain City Playhouse on Saturday nights in the 40s, 50s and 60s to square-dance the summer nights away . Black Rock Mountain State Park is a popular attraction in Mountain City. It is the highest state park in Georgia, with views of over 80 miles. Mountaintop cottages and camping are available, and a playground, hiking trails, and a fishing lake are just a few of the park’s attractions. Mountain City is home to Camp Blue Ridge, a coed summer camp that has been featured in the New York Times, with campers attending summer sessions from all over the country. The camp is also host of the Warrior Dash, an extreme 5k obstacle race that draws thousands of visitors and participants. Homes in Mountain City are affordable, and many are delightful cottages that were built in the early twentieth century.
